Zero to 1: How Can You Know Consciousness if You’re Lost in Thought?
From Observer to Abiding in the Here and Now
Can you know something you do not attend to?
Do you know what life is or what it is about?
We believe that we have figured it out, that we know what life is and what it’s about, but how can this be true when, in fact, we are hardly here for it?
The vast majority of your time and attention is spent on thinking, imagining the past, and projecting yourself into the future.
Yet life happens in the present, so how can we truly know life when we are not here to experience it fully?
To take it in, beyond what we think, feel, and believe about it.
To see it directly, not through our filters or projections.
Only when we abide in the present moment can we really know life
In abiding, you're present - there's no "you" separate from presence itself.
This is why abiding creates the foundation for this week’s practice.
When you can rest effortlessly as presence, it becomes possible to recognize that this presence is Consciousness knowing itself - not Consciousness knowing objects.
Abiding in The Present Moment
Abiding takes our Observer/Practice to the next phase, which is an effortless state of just being aware.
It’s like sitting on a porch, watching and experiencing as things come and go.
In this state, there is no longer the strain of being the observer, which creates a subtle subject-object duality.
Instead, we are just resting, being present, and watching as things come and go.
3 Steps: Abiding in Consciousness
I.
Come to the present moment right now.
Take a deep breath in, exhale, and relax.
Notice how everything around you is really in a deep state of peace.
Your mind, your next thought, and your feeling might cover this up with worry, anxiety, or dread, but unless you’re in actual danger, there’s peace all around you.
II.
Abide here, in the present moment.
Simply rest here.
Don't try to watch anything.
Don't work to be present.
Just stop efforting.
Presence is already happening—you're not creating it or maintaining it.
Relax into it, as if you're sitting on the porch watching… You're not working to see the sunset or listening to the birds.
You're just there, and awareness is naturally happening.
III.
When you get distracted, come back to the present moment.
Do this every day.
When you wake up, during meals, or while walking from room to room, take a few deep breaths and relax into the present moment.
Notice how effortlessly everything is happening.
Remember to return to this natural presence throughout the day as often as you can.
